Governor Ricardo Rosselló explained on Tuesday that his administration is taking measures to lower the costs of energy rates, during his message in the Opportunity Zones summit in San Juan.
The governor declared that his administration is working on a series of projects in key energy centrals that should reduce energy rates by 5.4 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh) by the year 2023.
“We want to transform the energy system and one of the commitments that we are carrying out is reducing energy costs,” Rosselló said.
Presently, the San Juan Centrals 5 and 6 are making a conversion from diesel to natural gas, which represents a reduction of 1.4 cents/kWh within the next five years, the governor explained.
The change to natural gas will also be applied to other centrals, as part of the Puerto Rico Public Energy Policy Act signed into law last month. By doing so, by 2020 the central in Mayagüez will see a reduction of 0.4 cents/kWh, while the Palo Seco Central will see a decrease of 2 cents/kWh by 2022.
The official’s remarks were issued in response to critics of his administration’s restructuring support agreement (RSA) struck with the P.R. Electric Power Authority’s bondholders and creditors.
