SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (CBS12) — Governor Ricardo Rosselló went to the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport to receive 26 American citizens who were stranded in Saint Martin after the passage of Hurricane Irma, government officials announced Saturday.
They were picked up at the Saint Martin Princess Juliana International Airport.
«We are coordinating efforts to mobilize 15 US medical students and three additional Americans,» Rosselló said. «Our solidarity goes out to our fellow citizens who faced the passage of Hurricane Irma on the island of Saint Martin. We know that the impact of the hurricane there was devastating and keeps the population in danger and with food shortages.»
Rosselló also added that Puerto Rican authorities will continue to combine efforts to coordinate humanitarian aid, such as medicine and food, for the sister islands of the Caribbean struck by Hurricane Irma.
The 26 people were transported in a C130 plane of the Puerto Rico National Guard Saturday at noon.
The mobilization effort was coordinated by the director of the Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration in Washington, DC (PRFAA), Carlos Mercader and the adjutant general of the Puerto Rico National Guard and Isabelo Rivera with the Department of State of the United States.
